Last event of the 2010/11 season
The last event of the 13th “season” of the league took place last Tuesday, followed by the traditional celebratory buffet and presentation. Before the event (taking place on our now also traditional course) only one of the league titles (men’s) was decided, so it was all to run for on the night in the ladies’ and vets’. As if to make things absolutely clear, men’s champion Tony White produced a first rate performance to be first home in 19-20, with John McCarthy 19 seconds adrift, followed by Steven Pilling in 20-48. First lady home was Clare in 25-13, an excellent performance, with Gill second in 25-32, followed by Louise in 26-21. Steven’s performance brought him 8 points in the Vets’ table, enough to give him second place in the Vet’s table and, therefore, the Vets’ trophy, whilst the 8 points Louise gained and the 10 points gained by Clare resulted in a tie in the Ladies’ league table and a sharing of the championship.
All in all, our 13th year has been an exciting one, and one in which we have seen a rise in average numbers again, after a dip in participation over the last 3 years or so. We’ve run new courses, been in different pubs (some of which managed to stay open even after our kiss of death visit). We’ve met new members and continued to provide challenges for those who have been around from the start. We’ve seen some performances improve considerably.
Our second cake competition was also a huge success, with 8 entries. Our thanks to everyone for joining in so enthusiastically with some very imaginative designs and wonderful tasting contributions. Our very grateful thanks to our panel of judges (Jane, Alan and Wendy) who had the really difficult job of making the decision. In the end, only one point separated first (Sue) from second (Louise).
We also owe grateful thanks to Sue for preparing the buffet and to Pete and dot for their help in doing so.
Start Times
Last month, I asked members to let me know their preferences for start times (possibly to bring forward the time to 7-00). I had some replies from members, some of whom have supported the league for a good number of years, telling me bringing it forward would make it difficult for them to get from work to the start on time. It wouldn’t be such a problem were all events to take place at one venue (i.e. the Rodillian clubhouse), but as our policy is to move around the area, it makes it more difficult. Because of this, therefore, we’ll be sticking to the 7-30 start at least for the time being.
Vets
We’re changing the nature of the Vets’ competition for next year. As our members are tending to get a bit older (as you do), we’ll be having three separate Vet’s prizes, over 40, over 50 and over 60. But, instead of having a separate Vets’ table, the O40 with the most points in their general table will take the O40 prize, and the same for the O50 and O60 prizes. Note there is only ONE prize per age group, won by whichever athlete, whether a man or woman, has most points. This means Vets’ points will no longer be awarded on the basis of where you finish in relationship to other Vets in your gender group and there will be no separate Vet’s table produced. As previously, the rule will be one prize per athlete, so if the first Man is a Vet 40, he can’t also win the Vets’ 40 prize and it would default to the next Vet 40, etc. Also, if the first Vet is, say, 55, he/she will take the Vet 40 prize and the Vets’ 50 prize will default to the next O50, etc.. The date for counting as a Vet is age on1st September 2011 (so if you are 40 on 2nd September, you will have to wait till next year). I’ll need to know your age on 1st September, so please don’t be put out when I ask you your age when you enter at next month’s event. To fund the extra prizes, we’ll be putting the entry fee up to £2.50 (which surely must still be a bargain).
Next Event
The next event will be on Tuesday 27th September and will be based at the Bay Horse at Wrenthorpe and will be two laps of the circuit around the old Bradford Road and across and past the Vine at Newton Bar (about 2.5 miles all told). Entry is £2.50. We’ve been made extremely welcome at this venue in the past.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League
Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon.
The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.
