WAKEFIELD DISTANCE RUNNING LEAGUE

NEWSLETTER 19th July 2011

If you go down in the woods today...........

.........be prepared to get lost. How it happened isn’t quite a mystery, but a number of runners managed to lose themselves on their first lap of the relays in the woods around Calder Grove last night. It seems “someone” went the wrong way and those in sight of him simply followed. The really great mystery is how did “someone else” manage to get lost on his second lap after running the first lap correctly? Ah well, it didn’t stop everyone having a good time both on the run and in the bar afterwards.

In the run itself, the “getting lost” phenomenon actually helped to spread the prizes out a bit more. The team made up of newcomer, and football referee, Patrick McTigue and Steven Pilling (despite getting lost) taking the first prize. Steven’s second lap run of 6-00 shows just what he is capable of doing, whilst Paddy’s 6-12 on the first lap shows he hasn’t lost much speed from the days when he was a junior cross country runner. Second home were Gerard and Sharon, with Clare and Dave coming in third. It was good to have Jonny Wootton making a return appearance (he last ran in the distance league about 4 years ago), his 5-46 first lap also showing the quality from his starring junior days.

The event actually did make things a little clearer in the leagues, with Tony going 12 points clear of Steven and making certain of the men’s championship. The ladies league though has an intriguing finish in prospect, with only two points separating Clare and Louise and with Charlotte in with an outside chance, and the vets title is even more enigmatic, with a possible 4 winners to sort out on the last night.

Start Times

As I mentioned last night, there is a suggestion that we don’t need to delay the starts of the events until 7-30, and that we could start at 7-00. The original reason for starting at 7-30 was to give everyone time to get to different venue after finishing work. The key question is - would a 7-00 start mean it would be less likely you would run? Please email me with any views on this. If we don’t have objections, we could perhaps try out a 7-00 start for the first run of the new “season” (i.e. September’s event).

Vets

Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. As in the last few years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.

Next Event

The next event will be on Tuesday 23rd August and will be based at the Rodillian runners club house. It’s the presentation night, using the traditional road course of just under 5k. As it’s presentation night, the usual salubrious buffet grub will be on offer, the bar will be open and we’ll be presenting the league prizes for this, our 13th “season.” Entry is £4 (non-runners will be £2 for food).

Result of 8th Meeting

Off road between 0.8 mile and 1.5 miles per lap (depends on how much you got lost)

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League

Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon.

The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.
