Back to normal numbers for last event of the season

A very pleasing turn-out of 19 runners ran around our traditional course for the last event of the 2010 season. The threatened rain held off and with relatively calm conditions, there were some good times recorded as Tony White led the field home by a minute and half over Mark Vollans. Tony, in fact, arrived only 4 minutes before the start for the faster runners (the slower runners had already gone) and did well to overcome the obvious lack of preparation. In the ladies’ event, Dot hand, who is getting faster rather than slower as she gets older, was 13 seconds ahead of newcomer Sarah Barnes, who had a storming run.

Results from the previous six years, using the same course, have been included in the results table below. It’s interesting to see that Stuart Anderson has competed in all the 7 events over this course, whilst Dave Marsh and Jane Senior have both missed only one each.

The men’s and ladies’ champions were, of course, already decided before the event, with Tony and Dot the clear winners respectively. The Vet’s championships was billed as a run-off between Stuart and Sue, but Sue’s pulled calf muscle prevented her from running (it’s incredible how running up and down Ben Nevis a few times can be accomplished without an injury, but what devastation stepping gently off the caravan step can cause), leaving Stuart to take the title. Stuart is a fitting champion, as he was actually our very first Vet’s winner 12 years ago. Dot, of course, was our very first Ladies’ winners.

On the subject of previous champions, the list for the last 6 years is given below. Unfortunately, I don’t have records for the 5 years before that (although I do know that our first champions were Andrew Johnson, Dot Hand and Stuart Anderson), so if anyone does have the old newsletters, or other records, I’d be very glad to hear from them.

The evening concluded with the now traditional end of season drink and supper in the Rodillians’ club house. These seem to get better year by year and our usual thanks go to Sue for her preparations, aided this year by Louise’s wonderful carrot cake and Dot’s home baked scones, whilst what Clare managed to do with a courgette has to be eaten to be believed. The only “downer” on the evening was that our supplier of the trophies let us down (first time ever, and he’s been ill so we can forgive him) and regrettably we didn’t receive them in time for the presentations. We’ll be presenting the trophies at the next event in September.

Speaking of the next event, we’ve decided to move the regular spot for the event from the second Thursday in the month to the last - this is to avoid other commitments of several supporters of the league. So, the next event will be on the 23rd September. We’re always on the lookout for new venues and courses, so if anyone has any ideas for future events, please come forward. Alan Slack has pointed out there appears to be a worrying correlation between the venues we use and closure (Rescuers, Vine Tree, Half Way House) - but we don’t think we actually are the kiss of death to landlords.

VETS

Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. As in the last few years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.

Next Event

The next event will take place on 23rd September. We haven’t done the Nagger Line Relays recently, so we’ll be there (based at Rodillian Rugby Club) in September. For those not in the know, this involves teams of two running 3 times each in relay up the old railway line (the “nagger lines”) and back down Baker Lane in Stanley. Individual times of each lap are aggregated to give individual times for league points, but on-the-night prizes are awarded to the first, second and third teams home.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League

Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon.

The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.
