New course voted a big hit

Alan and Dot came up with a superb new course for the 11th and penultimate event of the “season.” The 3 lap off-road course, based on the Navigation public house at Calder Grove was voted a big hit by the athletes who turned out, whilst the pub also gave a good welcome and a relaxed venue for a pint and natter afterwards.

The number participating was slightly up on last month, with 10 members taking part, injuries and holidays playing their usual role. However, we really do need to increase the monthly turn out if the league is to remain viable and everyone is urged to persuade friends and running mates to come along, whether they are past regular participants or new to the league. It would be a shame to let the league fold after 12 years.

Tony White opened up a gap almost from the start, and, despite a brave attempt by Mark Vollans to go with him, came in almost a minute and a half ahead. In the Ladies event, Dot Hand built gradually upon her lead to win by almost 2 minutes.

In the leagues, Tony added to his unbeatable lead in the Men’s division, whilst Dot’s 10 points confirmed her as worthy Champion in the Ladies’ section. Deciding the winner of the Vet’s table, however, is no further forward than last month. With Dot and Tony both unable to win the Vets’ title by dint of their leadership in the Ladies’ and Men’s respectively, the Vet’s championship will go to the next in the table - last month Stuart and Sue were tied on 61 points and after last night’s event they remain tied, but now on 69 points. It will all go down to the last race.

VETS

Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. As in the last 2 or 3 years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.

Tony’s Next Fixture

Tony White, that well known lurcher of Wakefield Harriers and long-time member and supporter of the Wakefield Distance League, is to be married on Saturday in the chapel Silcoates School, his alma mater. Our heartfelt congratulations go to Tony and his bride to be, with the very best wishes for a long and happy marriage. We all look forward to meeting your new wife, Tony, at the next event where you will, of course, be presented with the trophy for winning the men’s league for the second year running.

Next Event

The next event will take place on 12th August and, as it’s the final event of the season, it will also be the presentation evening at Rodillian Runners’ Headquarters (Stanlet Rodillian RUFC, Manley Park, Stanley). Traditional last event course of just about 3 miles. Slow start is at 7-25, faster runners at 7-30. Entry will be £4, including the usual scrumptious buffet (non-runners £2 for food please). The bar will be open and the showers available.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League

Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon.

The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.
