Fine Night’s Running
A new course, designed by Charlotte (she sends her most sincere apologies) led to a testing but enjoyable evening around Wrenthorpe. Our thanks to Charlotte for the design of the course (exactly 3 miles) and to Sue and Helen for spending their afternoon marking it out with chalk. Their efforts were rewarded with a good turn-out, the increased numbers continuing, with 17 turning out on an evening that threatened rain, but kept fine.
Tony White led everyone home in 19-37, a fine run given the challenging nature of the course, with John McCarthy following on in 20-24, chased all the way by Steven Pilling (now only a week and a half away from his marathon debut). In the ladies, Helen Mann took advantage of Clare Peckett’s absence to storm home in 25-46, with Gill Day and Louise Walker not too far behind.
In the leagues, Tony now moves to 3 points ahead of Steven, but this is the closest battle we have had at this stage in the campaign for quite some time. In the last two or three years, in fact, Tony has had the title sown up by now. In the ladies event, Clare’s absence leaves Helen and Louise joint leaders on 70 points each. Things aren’t a great deal clearer in vets’ table either. For the first time ever, we really could be faced with ordering all three trophies for presentation on the last night without knowing whose names to have engraved.
Which Night is best?
A number of members have asked if we could move the regular night for the events to Tuesdays and, given the success of this particular evening, there may well be a lot to be said for that. Historically, in fact, Tuesday was the regular evening for our events – we switched to Thursdays because Tuesday tended to be the night athletes did their longer club training runs. We’re committed to the next event remaining on the set date but unless anyone has any serious objections (if you have any, please email me), we’ll move to Tuesday night for the July and August events.
VETS
Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. As in the last few years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.
Next Event
The next event will be on Thursday 16th June and will be once again kindly hosted by Jane and Dave Marsh at their home in Walton. The course is off-road (same as previous years), 3.3 miles. Slow start 7-25, fast start 7-30. Entry is £4 and includes food. Parking is at Walton Social Club (see end of newsletter for directions).

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League
Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon.
The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.
