New route provides a fitting challenge
Richard and Helen produced an excellent 2 lap route around Springhead Park at Rothwell, last Thursday evening and were aptly rewarded with a good turn out of 14 runners, all the more remarkable given that a few regulars were unable to turn out (Graham Whitworth still unable to run, Louise recovering from her operation, Jane on a course, Jo completing her degree studies, Dot injured, etc). Has anyone seen Tony White, by the way? His absence over the last 2 events is a concern as he’s not prone to missing them – we hope he’ll be there at the last event of the season to pick up his trophy.
The run itself was 3.01 miles over 2 laps virtually traffic free, with a challenging hill to finish each lap. Alan Slack took the men’s prize, but 18-23 is not exactly a storming time over 3 miles for Alan, and just shows how challenging the course actually was. First lady was Sue Needham in 26-49. Andy Opie had an excellent run to finish second behind Alan in 21-17, with clubmate Mark Vollans only 16 seconds behind him. Welcome to Debbie Man, making her debut in 35-07, and Andy Opie.
Louise’s enforced absence means that Helen’s 9 points now confirms her as the Ladies’ leageue champion, but that leaves the Vets table still undecided. As both Tony and Helen are unable to take the Vets’ prize, it defaults to the next in the table - and that means either Dave Marsh (73 points) or Sue Needham (69 points) will be able to claim the trophy at the final event.
VETS
Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. Speak now or forever hold your peace (at least till next season). As last year, we are running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.
Next Event
The next event will take place on 13th August and, as it’s the final event of the season, it will also be the presentation evening at Rodillian Runners’ Headquarters (Stanlet Rodillian RUFC, Manley Park, Stanley). Traditional last event course of just about 3 miles. Slow start is at 7-25, faster runners at 7-30. Entry will be £4, including Sue’s usual scrumptious buffet (non-runners £2 for food please). The bar will be open and the showers available.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League
Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon (which we’ve hitherto never bothered to claim).
The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.
