Good turn-out numbers continues

16 athletes made it to the start line last night outside of Springhead Park in Rothwell for the 2 lap course. A good run out on a fine still night on a traffic free course of just over 3 miles was appreciated by everyone. The course can’t be described as anything but “challenging” with a real uphill drag at the end of each lap, and times reflected this. Our numbers would have been even higher had we not have been missing stalwarts Dot Hand and Stuart Anderson through unavoidable other commitments. In the race, Tony White was pressed for the first lap by John McCarthy before shaking him off to come home 26 seconds ahead in 19-49, whilst Helen Mann managed to pull back a first lap deficit of 4 seconds to in-form Clare Peckett to take first place in the ladies’ category in 25-22. Newcomer Dan Limb had a good run, finishing 4th in 21-33 – we hope he enjoyed the outing and the socialising afterwards and that he’ll have a long and successful association with the league.

We all have to thank Helen and Richard for their very kind gesture in providing the much appreciated sandwiches and chips at the end.

The intrigue continues in the leagues, with things looking closer than they have for some years. Tony’s win puts him back at the head of the men’s table, but with only a 1 point lead over Steven, it could go right down to the final event. It’s even closer in the ladies’ table, with only 2 points separating Louise, Clare and Helen, places will now be very closely contested in each of the remaining 4 events. With competitors only able to take one prize, the Vet’s table looks to be sown up by Tony and Steven.

VETS

Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. As in the last few years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.

Next Event

The next event will be on Tuesday 10th May. Meeting at The New Wheel Inn (known locally as “The Village Wheel”) Wrenthorpe Road, Wrenthorpe. For SATNAV users, the postcode is WF2 0JN. Note this is NOT the Wheel pub on the old Bradford Road. Best way, take the old Bradford Road out of Wakefield, turn left after about 2 miles at the cross roads with traffic lights, down Wrenthorpe Road. The New Wheel Inn is on left in about half a mile.

Charlotte is sorting out the course and details will be available later, but it will be about 3 miles on road. Slow start 7-25, fast start 7-30. Entry is £2.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League

Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon.

The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.

Almost Record turn-out for March

Numbers turning out for our monthly events are going from strength to strength, with almost a record turn-out for the March event last night at the Fox and Hounds, Newmillerdam. 14 athletes made it to the start on a cold but dry night. We actually have to go back as far as 2005 to beat that (17 turned out in 2005, the last 3 years’ March turn-outs being 9, 6 and 6). The challenging two lap course posed few problems for the respective winners, with Adam Copper making a very welcome return to the league events, coasting round in 18-28, and a very much in-form Claire Peckett, fresh from a skiing holiday heading the ladies’ field in 25-06. A good night was had also in the well resurrected pub, we were made very welcome and good beer - we won’t have to leave it too long before we make a return. It’s good to see the numbers continuing to rise, and also very good to have Adam and Steve joining us once again. Well done to Dave Shaw who put us all to shame by not only running in his red nose, but also spending the entire evening wearing it.

In the leagues, things are getting very intriguing, with Steven Pilling still topping the men’s section, but only one point ahead of Tony, whilst in the ladies section, Clare’s recent form sees her creeping up the table, now only four point behind Louise, and with Helen also only a couple of points further behind, things could be very interesting as we move into the second half of the “season.”

Next Event

The next event will be on Wednesday 13th April. Meeting at The Stepping Stones pub, Springhead Road, Rothwell. For SATNAV users, the postcode is LS26 0EX. Best way, take A6142 out of Wakefield, to Oulton, then A639 towards Leeds. First left (Park Lane), then first right (Springhead Road). The run will be about 3 miles, comprising two laps of Springhead Park. Slow start 7-25, fast start 7-30. Entry is £2. Last time we were there, the pub made us very welcome with a relaxed atmosphere and good ale.
