The Curse Strikes Again
Our curse on pub landlords continued this week, but this time with a twist with our planned venue actually closing down two days BEFORE the event, forcing upon us a complete rethink and change of venue. Luckily, the Bay Horse at Wrenthorpe virtually stands upon the old Vine Tree course, so it became a relatively simple matter of letting everyone know of the changes. In the end, we had 11 runners on the night, plus me (adding in my time from running and checking out the course earlier in the evening), giving us 6 teams of two for the relay. Sing my new toy (GPS), we were also able to settle debate about the distance - according to the satellites, each lap is 1.35 miles.
The event was exciting, with teams decided on the basis of rankings of form. In the absence of Tony White, Steven Pilling took on the role of pole position, but it was John McCarthy who led the first lap home with a time of 8-47, 37 seconds ahead of Steven. Thoughts then turned to whether or not a very nervous Sue Needham would manage to hold on to the lead which she, in fact, did coming home 28 seconds ahead of Mark Hannett, whose 11-27 run brought his team from 3rd to 2nd. Fastest man on the night was, of course, John, whilst Claire Peckett stormed round, showing possible hidden talents for middle distance events, to head the ladies in a time of 10-48. Clare was, rather unfortunately, let down by the miserable performance of her “virtual partner” (no prizes for guessing who that was).
In the league tables, Tony’s absence means that Steven’s 9 points takes him to the top of the men’s league and makes things very interesting for the second half of the “season,” whilst Louise remains 8 points clear at the top of the ladies.
VETS
Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. As in the last few years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.
Next Event
The next event will be on 10th March and will be a return to the Fox and Hounds at Newmillerdam. This pub was actually one of the first to be hit by our curse and closed for a while, but we are now informed has reopened and, indeed, recently won an award as pub of the year. From Wakefield, go past the dam and start up the hill, the Fox and Hounds is on right hand side as you climb the hill. There is a car park opposite. Postcode for SATNAV users is WF2 6QQ. Approximately 3 miles on road.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League
Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon.
The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.
