WAKEFIELD DISTANCE RUNNING LEAGUE

NEWSLETTER 12th March 2010

Ron Needham 01924 829495 email: rodillianrunners@yahoo.co.uk

It’s nearly the light nights

After a few events in which the turnout has gradually increased, it was quite a disappointment to have only 6 athletes making the two lap run around Wrenthorpe last night, after illnesses and injuries had taken their toll. But, as the clocks change shortly, and spring is just around the corner, it’s the last run in darkness and, hopefully, the colds and viruses and aches and pains will diminish.

Alan Stainer organised the quite challenging two lap course for us, starting just outside of Wrenthorpe park. We had a phased start, so giving everyone someone to chase (or to try and avoid being caught by), and it worked well, with most crossing the finish line a few seconds apart (times were then adjusted to sort out the true positions). Tony White was a clear leader, but Richard Mann was only just over a minute and a half off the pace.

The absence of Dave Marsh gave Tony the opportunity to increase his lead in the men’s league and he’s now 33 points clear with only 5 events remaining. Having succumbed to the dreaded bug, Louise now has quite a bit of catching up to do if she’s to overhaul Dot’s lead of 8 points in the ladies’ league, whilst in the Vets, Stuart Anderson is creeping steadily up the table and may well be challenging Dave for the trophy (if Dot and Tony do take their respective gender league titles).

We had our after event get together in the Bay Horse and were made very welcome in very pleasant surroundings - with Old Peculiar on tap to boot. As we’d bought 6 prizes, everyone went home with an Easter egg (as traditional for the event closest to Easter).

VETS

Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. As in the last 2 or 3 years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.

Next Event

The next event will take place on 8th April, from The Malt Shovel, just off Junction 41 of the M1. Depending on the weather, it will either be Alan Stainer’s off-road run (across the M1 footbridge) or the run on the old green lane to The Nook.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League

Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon (which we’ve hitherto never bothered to claim).

The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.

Distance Leage Thursday 11th March

The next event will be this forthcoming Thursday (11th). Slight change of venue to that previously announced owing to a clash with the weightwatchers meeting in Wrenthorpe (they'll be using the same car park we would have used). Meet now in the car park in the park between the Pot Oil pub and the Bay Horse pub. Take the old Bradford Road from Newton Bar (i.e. not the dual carriageway) towards Wrenthorpe. In about a mile, turn left at a junction on a bend by the Bay Horse. This leads to the Pot Oil and past Wrenthorpe Park on the left. The car park is in the park in about half a mile. Alternatively, from J41 of M1, drve towards Wakefield down the old Bradford Road (first slip road off dual carriageway after leaving M1). Turn right at the traffic lights and down through Wrenthorpe village. Keep on same road whnb you rach the Pot Oil and look for the car park on the right in about half a mile, in the park.

Route is now on the web site http://www.rodillianrunners.co.uk/page7.html- we can then go in to either the Pot Oil of the Bay Horse, depending on which is busier. (run is two laps of the course shown).

About Us

Welcome to the Rodillian Runners. We are a very small and very friendly running club based at Stanley Rodillians Rugby Union Club (Manley Park, off Lee Moor Road, Stanley). Members are mainly social runners but the club caters for all standards from very beginners, joggers, fun-runners, people who like to run to keep fit through to serious race participants.
