Return to the Unicorn

It’s a while since we were at the Unicorn in Carlton for the monthly fixture, and we were blessed with good running weather (dry, not too warm, not too cold) and a good welcome from the new landlord and landlady there. We have an interesting history with this location - in our early visits, a number of years ago, we upset the locals by sitting in their seats and winning the quiz, but we were made very welcome this time, with a warm fire, good ale and a pleasant ambience. 11 runners turned out, not bad for what has been over the years the month of lowest turn-out. Good to see also a good turn-out in support of those unable to run because of illness, lack of fitness, etc.

Tony White took good advantage of Alan Slack’s illness and Tom Wainwright’s enforced absence abroad to increase his lead in the men’s league to 19 points, whilst the absence of Dave Marsh and Dot Hand, through illness, brought a new contender into play for the Vet’s title with Steve Pilling sneaking up to third place. In the ladies, a good run by Claire Peckett won her the event for the evening, although Louise was apparently way ahead when she unaccountably took a wrong turning - in the end, Louise did very well to pull so much back, but her third place let Sue Needham into the lead in the ladies league.

VETS

Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. It’s the start of a new season and it’s now the time to let me know so you can be included next year, otherwise, the “speak now or forever hold your peace (at least till next season)” rule will apply. As in the last 2 or 3 years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.

Next Event

The next event will take place on 11th February, from The Vine, Newton Bar and it will follow the one lap relay format (so about 1.5 miles each runner). Start at 7-30, but please be early so we can sort out teams. The landlord there makes us very welcome indeed and usually puts on sandwiches for us, so let’s have a good turn-out please.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League

Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon (which we’ve hitherto never bothered to claim).

The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.

Cops and Robbers around Stanley

The annual Christmas Handicaps were enjoyed by 17 runners last night, with almost everyone joined in the fun and dressed in appropriate fancy dress - amongst others, we had a policewoman, an elf, a robber, batgirl, at least two fairies and several Santas.

The run itself was won by Mark Vollans who confounded the handicapping to finish almost a minute ahead of next home Richard Mann. Mark’s actual time was an excellent 21-39 making him third finisher on actual times. Thereafter, the handicapping created chaos with the results recording as several runners finished together. Suffice it to say we tried our best to record as accurately as we could, but with so many runners finishing (in the dark too) with so few seconds between them, it was an impossible job to be accurate. First woman home was Louise Walker, who was also the fastest on actual times.

The after run activities were enjoyed by all, with the usual Christmas buffet, the prizes and the bar open (sorry about the men’s showers, no idea what went wrong there). The fancy dress prizes, so well judged by Jane (for the second year running), went to WPC Helen and, just to prove there is no discrimination against elves, Gerard.

Many thanks to all who helped on the night.

In the leagues, Tony strengthened his lead at the top of the men’s league, pulling 10 points clear, whilst Dot extended her lead by a further point. The Vet’s league table is close at the top, with champion Dave Marsh thereabouts as last year, to possibly pick up the trophy if Dot and Tony take their respective men’s/women’s titles.

Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables.
