Good turn-out for last event of “the season”

Eighteen runners turned out for the last event of the current “season” (the 11th in the history of the league) last Thursday night. A warm still evening gave good running conditions for the now traditional road run from the rugby club house around Stanley and Carlton of just under 3 miles. Alan Slack headed the men’s race, with a time of 17-32, just under 2 minutes ahead of league champion Tony White, whilst Jane Senior too the ladies’ event in 24-10. Welcome to newcomer Sarah Paul - hope you enjoyed the run and the events in the bar afterwards.

The men’s and ladies’ championships had, of course, already been decided, with Tony White and Helen Mann taking the trophies - both new and very worthy champions. The Vet’s championship went right down to the wire, with Sue Needham and Dave Marsh only four points apart at the start of the race. It was a close run thing, and we had to recalculate the points three times to be sure, with Dave finishing only one point ahead to become a very worthy league champion.

After the run, a good time, as always, was had by all in the club bar, with the presentations and the usual salubrious buffet supper (our thanks, yet again, to Sue). My apologies to everyone for the problems and delay in getting the bar functioning. Photos are to be put on the Rodillian Runners website (thanks to Richard), if they aren’t there already.

This was the conclusion of our eleventh “season” of the Distance League. Looking back at previous records, and, despite the odd problem (some of them very odd) here and there, it’s still going strong. I have records of the leagues from the 6th season onwards, but lost the rest in a computer crash in 2003, so if anyone has any old newsletters (dated before September 2003), I’d be very glad to have copies of them We do know that, of the participants in the very first run, two have continued to turn out and actually took part in the event last week: Stuart Anderson and Sue Needham. Dot Hand, one of the other “founder members” would have run last week, but was on holiday, whilst another, Alan Stainer, was officiating.

VETS

Please let me know if you are a vet and haven’t been included in the Vets tables. It’s the start of a new season next event and it’s now the time to let me know so you can be included next year, otherwise, the “speak now or forever hold your peace (at least till next season)” rule will apply. As in the last 2 or 3 years, we shall be running a combined vets league - ladies will also be given vets points but depending on where they finish amongst other lady vets, as will men, and the tables combined (so, if you finish first lady vet, you get 10 points, and if you finish first man vet, you get 10 points - all go in same table and winner will be one with most points, male or female). For our purposes, male vets start at 40, female at 35.

Next Event

The next event (first of the new season) will take place on 10th September, on road, from the Vine Tree pub at Newton Bar. The landlord always makes us very welcome there, so let’s have a good turn-out please. Slow start is at 7-25, faster runners at 7-30. Entry will be £2.

Sandal Castle

Just a reminder, the Sandal Castle off-road 10k will take place on 6th September. If anyone is not running and wishes to help out by officiating, please let me know.

Rodillian Runners and the Distance League

Rodillian Runners is a running club affiliated to NoEAA and UK Athletics. Our headquarters are Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club and we meet there on Tuesday nights for training runs. Most everyone is very welcome to run with us on a Tuesday night but we have to be aware that we are using the rugby club premises and facilities and to be fair to our hosts. For that reason, we ask that all who use the facility on Tuesday training nights either join us as first or second claim members (which in effect means joining the rugby club and gaining all the benefits of membership) or pay a £1-50 per session training fee (this is still 50p cheaper than other clubs in the area). First or second claim membership costs £32 per year. For this, members get full membership of the rugby club and are able to use the facilities free and also to book the clubhouse for private parties for free. First claim members are also able to vote at Rodillian Runners’ meetings and to compete in open events under the banner of “Rodillian Runners.” First and second claim members will also be able to have other advantages such as making use of club places in the London Marathon (which we’ve hitherto never bothered to claim).

The distance league was started to provide a fun and not too serious monthly run out for members and friends of Rodillian Runners and a social occasion afterwards. There is a general open invitation for anyone in the area to take part – the more the merrier. The Committee of Rodillian runners, however, reserves the right at any time to decide who may and may not participate.
